Veterinary Toxicology (Third Edition)
Humans often err in assuming that dogs can consume foods not suitable for people, such as spoiled food, garbage and carrion, which can result in food poisoning. Many types of pathogenic bacteria grow rapidly in discarded food, as it is often high in proteins and carbohydrates. Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus commonly cause enterotoxin food poisoning in dogs and people, with vomiting within a couple of hours of ingestion and diarrhoea within hours and up to two days later, that can be severe and haemorrhagic. Fluid and electrolyte abnormalities and acid-base imbalance may also require treatment. This book chapter focuses on enterotoxin poisoning in dogs.
